Four all-weather mats holding rain, snow, mud and a spill

Tesla Model X All-Weather Floor Mats: TPE, Rubber or Carpet?

The short answer: for a Model X that carries a family, luggage and the occasional muddy day, all-weather TPE is the practical choice. It keeps rain, melted snow, mud and spills on the mat, and it rinses clean. Carpet looks closest to the factory interior but absorbs liquid. Rubber is durable, but heavier and often has a stronger new-mat smell.

A Model X has a lot of floor to protect: two or three rows, kids' shoes, and a big cargo area. That is why the material matters more here than on a smaller car. This guide compares the three common materials, shows which suits which driver, and lists what to check on a Model X set.

TPE vs rubber vs carpet on a Model X

All-weather TPE

Waterproof, flexible and usually lighter than rubber, with raised edges that hold liquid. It rinses clean with water. Good for families, pets, wet climates and cargo areas.

Rubber

Very durable and waterproof, but heavier and bulkier. Many people notice a stronger smell when it is new.

Carpet

Closest to the factory look and soft underfoot, but it absorbs water, mud and spills, stains, and needs vacuuming instead of rinsing.

Rain, snow and slush in winter TPE or rubber
Kids, snacks and spills in three rows TPE
Mud, sand, sports gear in the cargo area TPE or rubber
Dry climate, you value the factory look Carpet
Not sure TPE

Why TPE and rubber are easy to clean

Because liquid stays on the surface, cleaning a waterproof mat is mostly emptying it. You lift the mat out, tip it over, rinse and let it dry. A carpet mat, by comparison, needs vacuuming and spot cleaning.

What to check on a Model X set

  1. Seat layout: 5, 6 or 7 seats. See how the layouts differ.
  2. Model-year range: the sets are listed by years, so match yours. See Model X floor mats by year.
  3. Raised edges: they keep water and mud from reaching the original carpet.
  4. Coverage of the second and third rows: they are easy to forget and they take the most wear from kids.
  5. Cargo pieces: see what a cargo set covers.
  6. Drive side: according to the seller, the floor mats are for left-hand-drive cars only.

Frequently asked questions

Are all-weather mats the same as rubber mats?

Not exactly. "All-weather" describes what the mat does, and the material can be TPE or rubber. Both are waterproof.

Are TPE mats good in winter?

They hold melted snow, salt and slush on the surface so you can lift the mat out and empty it. That is the main reason people choose all-weather mats for winter.

Do I need all-weather mats if I live in a dry place?

Not necessarily. But kids, pets and the cargo area still bring dirt and spills, so many owners choose them anyway.

Can I use Model S mats in a Model X?

No. They are different cars with different floors.
