Fabric Floor Mats in a Tesla: 6 Drawbacks and When They Still Make Sense
Share
Fabric floor mats are what most cars come with, and many Tesla owners choose them because they match the interior. The problem shows up the first time something spills or the first wet week. Here is what to expect.
The 6 drawbacks of fabric floor mats
1. They soak up liquid
A spilled drink or a wet shoe does not stay on the surface. It goes into the fibres, and can reach the original carpet underneath.
2. They stain
Coffee, mud, salt marks and grease sink in and are hard to remove completely. Light colours show it the most.
3. They dry slowly
A damp mat in a closed car can stay wet for a long time, and that can lead to a musty smell.
4. They hold dirt and sand
Grit works its way between the fibres. You usually need to vacuum, not just shake the mat out.
5. They are harder to clean
You cannot simply rinse them. Cleaning means vacuuming, spot treatment and waiting for them to dry.
6. They wear where it counts
The heel area under the driver's foot sees the most friction, and fabric tends to look worn there sooner than a molded surface.
These are general characteristics of carpet mats. Quality varies between sets, so check the seller's description before ordering.
When fabric still makes sense
- You live in a dry climate and rarely bring water or mud into the car.
- You care most about a factory look and a soft feel under the foot.
- You are happy to vacuum regularly and spot-clean spills straight away.
