Do You Need Mud Flaps on a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y?

The short answer: mud flaps are worth it if you drive on gravel, wet roads or salted winter roads, and you want to keep the lower doors and side skirts cleaner. Owners report no measured range loss from them. Choose a set listed for your exact model and year, and prefer a no-drill fit.

Tires throw water, grit and small stones at the lower part of the car. On a Model 3 or Model Y that means the rear door, the rear quarter panel and the side skirt. Mud flaps are the cheap guard against it. Here is what they do, what owners say, and what to check before buying.

What owners say

  • Chips and tire marks. Owners report rock chips on the rear quarter panel and the rocker panel, and black tire rubber that sticks to the paint at the rear, which shows most on white cars. Some see chips only on the side facing oncoming traffic on gravel roads.
  • Range and drag. Nobody in the owner discussions reported a measured range loss from flaps. Speed has a far bigger effect on range.
  • Spray. Rear flaps also keep spray off the car behind you in the rain.
  • Mixed opinions. Some owners install them mostly for looks or symmetry, and some say the rear of the car stays dirty from airflow anyway.

What to check when you choose mud flaps

  1. Fit for your model and year. The Model 3 and Model Y, and the Highland, Juniper and Model Y L, have different wheel arches. Choose a set listed for your car.
  2. No-drill or drill. A no-drill set uses the existing mounting points, so you do not make new holes in the car.
  3. Material and flex. TPE is flexible, which helps on curbs and speed bumps.
  4. Clearance. The flaps should not touch the ground on ramps.
  5. Rear flaps that hug the body. Some owners warn that body-hugging styles can rub the paint, and suggest a layer of paint protection film under them.
  6. Set size. Check whether you get two flaps or all four wheels.

Frequently asked questions

Do mud flaps affect range?

Owners have not reported a measured loss, and the flaps are small compared with the car. Your speed has a much bigger effect.

Will mud flaps scratch the paint?

Flaps that hug the body can rub if dirt gets trapped. A no-drill, flexible set that sits clear of the paint, or a layer of paint protection film, reduces the risk.

Do mud flaps stop rock chips?

They stop many of the stones thrown by the tires, but not stones from other cars or the front of the car.

Can I install them myself?

A no-drill set is made for it. Follow the seller's instructions, and take your time with the clips.
