Tesla Glass Roof Sunshade: Do They Work and How to Choose One
Share
The glass roof is one of the best things about a Model 3 or Model Y, until you come back to a car that has been parked in the sun. Here is what a roof sunshade does, what to compare, and what else helps.
What the factory glass does, and what it does not
Tesla describes the roof as tinted glass with UV and infrared protection. It does not publish how much heat that blocks, and owners often say the cabin still gets hot on a sunny day, especially after it has been parked. A shade is an extra layer that stops the sun at the glass, before it reaches the seats.
What to check when you choose a roof sunshade
- Fit for your model and year. The Model 3 and the Model Y, and the Highland and Juniper refreshes, all have different roof shapes. Choose a shade listed for your car.
- Front and rear coverage. The glass roof has a front and a rear section. A set with a shade for each covers the whole roof.
- A reflective side. The silver side faces out, and the soft side faces the cabin.
- How it installs. Clip-in shades go in and out without adhesive. Magnetic and adhesive types hold in other ways.
- How it folds. A shade that folds small is easy to keep in the car when you want the view back.
- Color. Black blends into the headliner and grey is a lighter look.
What owners complain about
Shades are not perfect, and it helps to know the usual issues before you buy.
- Sagging in the middle. Some owners report that a shade droops, which can affect the view through the rear window. It varies by product and fit.
- Weak clips. Flimsy clips are another common complaint, so a firm, snug fit matters.
- Installed from outside. Most roof shades cannot be adjusted from the driver's seat. You put them in and take them out when you stop.
- Less useful in mild climates. If you rarely park in strong sun, you may not need one.
Roof shade or windshield shade?
| Type | What it covers | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Glass roof shade | The front and rear roof glass | Needs the right fit for your car |
| Windshield shade | The windshield only | Cheap and quick, but leaves the roof uncovered |
| Side window shades | Side glass | Adds privacy, for example for camping |
Other ways to keep a Tesla cooler
- Pre-cool from the app before you get in, so you step into a cooler cabin.
- Use Cabin Overheat Protection, which runs the air conditioning while the car is parked when the cabin gets very hot. It uses battery, and a shade can reduce how often it has to run.
- Park in the shade when you can, or turn the car so the roof faces away from the afternoon sun.

Frequently asked questions
Do Tesla roof sunshades work?
They add a reflective layer over the glass, which owners use to keep the cabin cooler when parked in the sun. How much cooler depends on the climate and the fit.
Do I need one if the roof already has UV and infrared protection?
The factory glass reduces UV and heat, but many owners still use a shade for parked cars in strong sun, and for privacy.
Can I leave the shade in all year?
You can, but in cooler months many people take it out for the light and the view. A shade that folds and stores in a bag makes that easy.
Will a roof shade help when camping?
It adds privacy and cuts the sun in the morning. See our Model Y camping guide.
