Best Mattress for Tesla Model Y: What to Check Before You Buy
Share
Sleeping in a Model Y is popular because the rear seats fold almost flat and the car can run its own heating or cooling. The mattress is what turns that space into a bed. Here is what to look at before you buy one.
What to check before you buy
- Length. Owner guides suggest a mattress of roughly 72–75 inches (about 183–190 cm) for the length of the folded cargo area. Taller sleepers can slide the front seats forward to gain room.
- Width. Two adults can sleep side by side on a mattress about 48–50 inches (roughly 122–127 cm) wide. A narrower one suits one person.
- The step behind the front seats. The floor of a Model Y is not perfectly level once the seats are folded, and a gap or step appears behind the front seats. A thicker mattress or a filler block helps, and parking with the nose slightly uphill makes the bed feel more level.
- Pump and set-up time. An inflatable with a built-in pump takes a couple of minutes. Check whether the pump is rechargeable, because the car's power is better spent on climate.
- Thickness and material. A velvet or soft top layer is more comfortable, and a thicker body fills more of the uneven floor.
- Fit for your car. Check the model years listed, and whether the mattress is made for your Model Y or for a universal cargo area.
Inflatable, foam or folding?
| Type | Good for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Inflatable | Packs small, quick set-up, a thick body | Needs inflating, and a puncture ends the night |
| Foam or folding pad | Steady and no pump, ready at once | Bulky to store in the car |
| Custom-fit foam | Shaped to the cargo area and the step | Costs more, and takes the most space |
Plan for Camp Mode
Tesla's Camp Mode keeps the cabin temperature, ventilation, lighting and the touchscreen running while you sleep. Tesla's own estimate is about 1% of battery per hour, roughly 10% over an eight-hour night. Owners report 5–15% overnight in typical weather and closer to 20% in the cold, and Camp Mode switches off at about 20% battery to protect your range. Two details matter: Camp Mode does not lock the car for you, so lock it before you sleep, and Sentry Mode is turned off while it runs.
Park with at least 40–60% charge for a full night. Shades for the glass help the climate system and add privacy, for example our glass roof sunshade.
One option: our Model Y air mattress
If you want an inflatable, our Model Y air mattress is made for the Model Y cargo area. According to the seller it is 190 × 130 cm (about 75 × 51 inches) and 20 cm thick when inflated, with a rechargeable pump that fills or empties it in about 2 minutes, and it is listed for Model Y 2021–2026, including Juniper. The seller recommends filling it to about 80–90% rather than all the way. Check the fit for your exact car before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Can you sleep in a Tesla Model Y?
Yes. The rear seats fold nearly flat, and an adult up to about 6 ft 2 in can lie down, especially with the front seats moved forward. A mattress makes it comfortable.
Can two adults sleep in a Model Y?
Yes. Two adults fit side by side on a mattress about 48–50 inches wide.
Is it safe to leave the climate on overnight?
Camp Mode is designed for it. It runs the climate for roughly 1% of battery per hour and stops at about 20%. Lock the doors yourself and crack a window slightly if condensation builds up.
Will an inflatable mattress fill the gap behind the front seats?
A thick mattress covers part of it, but it depends on how far forward the front seats are. Many owners add a filler block or park slightly nose-uphill.
