Tesla Auto-Presenting Door Handles: How the Pop-Out Kit Works and What to Check

The short answer: On a Model 3 or Model Y you open a door by pressing the wide end of the flush handle so it pivots out. An auto-presenting kit adds a small motor to each original handle, so the handle comes out by itself and closes again after. According to the seller, it can be triggered by touching the handle, unlocking on the screen, the key fob or your phone, and as you walk up to the car. It is a convenience, not a necessity. The seller recommends fitting at a car shop, Tesla's warranty can exclude damage linked to non-Tesla parts, and a few things are worth asking the seller before you order.

Tesla's flush door handles are simple once you know the trick, but guests often do not. This guide explains how the standard handle works according to Tesla's manuals, what the add-on kit changes according to the seller, what Tesla says about handles in ice, and what to check before you order. The kit is a third-party product, not made by Tesla, and your own manual has the final word for your car.

How the standard handle works

Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y manuals describe the same basic steps. Use your thumb to push the wide part of the door handle. The Model Y manual adds that the handle pivots toward you. Then open the door by pulling the handle or the edge of the door. The handle retracts automatically. The manuals also ask you to keep fingers, jewelry and acrylic nails from being pinched by the door or the handle mechanism.

What the kit adds

According to the seller, the kit adds a small motor to each of your original handles, so they pop out on their own and close again after. The seller lists:

  • Your original handles stay. The motor mounts on the factory handles, and the seller lists plug-and-play connectors with no wire cutting.
  • Several ways to bring the handle out. Touching the handle, unlocking from the screen, the key fob or your phone.
  • Out as you walk up. The seller says the handles present automatically when you approach the car.
  • A white LED light to help you find the handles at night.
  • All four doors in one kit.

Handles in ice

Tesla's cold weather pages for the Model 3 and Model Y say that in severe winter conditions, ice can make the door handles harder to open, and ice inside a handle can stop it from opening at all. Tesla's advice:

  • Prepare before winter. Applying WD-40 to the door handle pivot pins beforehand can help prevent ice building up inside the handle.
  • Do not force it. Do not use tools or excessive force to free a frozen handle. The Model Y page suggests pressing firmly on the front part of the handle so it rocks slightly inward and breaks the ice, then pressing the rear part to open as usual, and opening and closing it a few more times once it moves.
  • Use the app for the driver door. When you are next to the car, Unlatch Door in the app pops open the driver door.
  • Before you drive. The Model Y page says to make sure the handle is fully pressed in before you get in, and both pages say to check that the door is fully closed before driving away.

The seller's listing does not say how the motors behave when a handle is iced up. If you live somewhere with hard winters, ask the seller before you order, and follow Tesla's advice not to force a frozen handle either way.

Before you buy

  • Ask about the manual way. The car itself may be fine, but a motor can still stop working, for example after a fault or a loose connector. The listing does not say whether you can then still press the wide end and open the door by hand, as before. Ask the seller.
  • Fitting. The seller recommends professional installation at a car shop and provides installation videos if you do it yourself.
  • A handle that moves by itself. Tesla's manuals already ask you to keep fingers, jewelry and acrylic nails clear of the handle mechanism. With a handle that comes out on its own, that matters even more, especially with children around the car.
  • Check the warranty wording. In the edition of Tesla's New Vehicle Limited Warranty that we read (Qatar, effective July 2024), non-genuine parts and accessories, and their installation, are not covered, and damage linked to their installation or use is excluded. Warranty editions differ by region, so read yours or ask Tesla before you decide.
  • Pick the right Model Y version. The seller's Model Y versions overlap in 2025: one is for the Model Y 2020-2025 before the Juniper, and one is for the Model Y Juniper and Model Y L. Check which design your car is before you order.

Is it worth it?

The standard handle works well once you know how to use it, so you do not need a kit. It makes the most sense if you often have passengers who are new to the car, if you like the idea of the handle waiting for you as you walk up, or if the light at night appeals to you. If you live in a cold climate, get an answer from the seller about ice first.

Frequently asked questions

Do I keep my original handles?

Yes, according to the seller. The motor mounts on the factory handles.

Can I still open the door by hand?

The listing does not say. Ask the seller before you order what happens if one of the motors stops working while the car itself is fine.

How do the handles come out?

The seller lists touching the handle, unlocking from the screen, the key fob or your phone, and says the handles present automatically as you approach the car.

What if the car's own battery is dead?

Then the kit has no power either, and it cannot help. Tesla's Model Y manual says that with no low-voltage power you cannot open the front trunk with the touchscreen, key fob or mobile app, and describes a way in through the tow eye cover with an external power supply such as a portable jump starter. We explain the steps in our jump-start guide.

Will it work in ice?

The listing does not say. Tesla says ice can stop a handle from opening and that you should not use tools or force, so ask the seller if you live somewhere cold.

Can I fit it myself?

The seller recommends professional installation at a car shop and provides installation videos for people who fit it themselves.

Will it affect my Tesla warranty?

It can. In the edition we read, Tesla's warranty excludes non-genuine parts and their installation, and damage linked to them. Editions differ by region, so check yours.

Is there a version for the Model S or Model X?

Not in the versions we list. The kit is listed for the Model 3 and Model Y only.
